Workshop on Swine Disease Control in Asia held in Beijing

The Veterinary Bureau (VB) of MOA, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE)jointly held the Workshop on Swine Disease Control in Asia in Beijing on Nov. 18-20, 2014.
Mr. Zhang Zhongqiu, Director-General of VB, Dr. Gregorio José Torres Peñalver from Scientific and technical Department of OIE, and Mr. Percy W. Misika, FAO Representative in China attended and addressed the Workshop.
With the accelerated process of economic globalization, international trade in animal and animal products has kept growing remarkably, creating greater risks of trans-boundary spread of animal diseases.In order to secure the healthy development of pig farming industry, since 2013 China has initiated and financed the program of swine disease control in Asia through OIE''s World Animal Health and Welfare Fund. The program aims at improving the prevention and control of swine diseases and increasing diagnostic capability in the region, updating the knowledge of status quo of animal diseases within the region, particularly in neighboring countries, and enhancing responses to the spread of exotic animal diseases.
In his speech at the Workshop, Mr. Zhang Zhongqiu noted that the program of Swine Disease Control in Asia will provide a new opportunity for the control of swine disease in the region, facilitate communication, information-sharing and coordination among members in Asia and the Pacific,and contribute to the undertaking of animal disease control worldwide.
FAO and OIE experts and representatives of different countries had an in-depth discussion on the status, control measures and research achievements concerning major swine diseases in Asia, and exchanged views on the upcoming tasks of the program.

The Workshop was organized by China Animal Disease Control Center (CADCC), and the participants included officials from VB and CADCC, representatives of FAO Representation in China, FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific,OIE headquarters, OIE Regional Representation for Asia and the Pacific (RRAP), and OIE Sub-Regional Representation for South-East Asia (SRR-SEA), as well as delegates from Japan, Korea and ASEAN countries.
